While on international duty with Sweden, Victor Lindelof dropped a new hint about his future at Manchester United..
Erik ten Hag has preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, so the 28-year-old center-back has spent most of the season on the bench or out of the squad.
Lindelof has made just nine Premier League appearances this season and is under contract until the summer of 2024.
Lindelof has started just one of United’s last nine Premier League games, against Leicester City in February.
He joined United from Portuguese club Benfica in 2017 and has made 217 appearances for the Red Devils.
But he has grown frustrated with his lack of playing time, and while on international duty with Sweden, he said on Thursday: ‘Obviously, I want to play.
‘That’s why I play football; you like to play games.
I’m currently focused on the national team and the remainder of the season with the club. We need to re-evaluate and see what works best in the summer.’
In the January transfer window, Atletico Madrid approached United about Lindelof, who was also being pursued by Inter Milan, but Ten Hag was keen to keep him as a backup.
However, United may be willing to agree to a sale in the summer, when Lindelof’s contract will expire and funds for new signings will be needed.
This season, Lindelof has mostly been used in domestic cups and the Europa League, but even in those competitions, he has had limited opportunities as United has progressed.
The Red Devils won the Carabao Cup in February, will face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals, and will face Sevilla in the Europa League last eight.
