Craig McPherson, the Rangers women’s coach, has apologized publicly for allegedly headbutting Celtic manager Fran Alonso during this week’s Old Firm derby..
The Scottish FA charged McPherson with a headbutt on Alonso at the end of Monday’s match at Broadwood Stadium.
The incident, which is being investigated by police, occurred after the Hoops had scored a late equalizer in the 1-1 tie.
McPherson will face an SFA hearing on April 13 after being found in violation of disciplinary rules.
McPherson stated in a statement: “I’d like to express my heartfelt regret for my actions at the conclusion of Monday’s Old Firm match at Broadwood.
“I know I’ve disappointed myself, our team, and the club.
I hold myself to the highest of standards and have never done anything like this before in my long coaching career, and I am well aware that my actions fell far short of that.
“This club, too, is built on incredibly high standards, and I’ve already apologized to the board, the football staff, and our fantastic group of players, whom I adore.” I’d also like to apologize to Rangers fans because I understand what a privilege it is to represent this club in any capacity, and I’m sorry that on this occasion I did not uphold the standards this club expects.
I also recognize how exciting a time it is for the women’s game in Scotland, which I have grown to care deeply about, and I apologize for any negative impact my actions have had on our efforts to grow the game. Finally, I want to thank Fran Alonso for accepting my full apology following our lengthy conversation earlier this week.
“At my hearing, I will also apologize to the Scottish FA and, of course, accept whatever punishment they deem appropriate. I just wanted to apologize today, express my deep regret, and explain how out of character this situation has been for me.”
McPherson’s involvement in the incident with Alonso was described as “out of character” by Michael Beale yesterday..
“I didn’t see it live,” he added. I haven’t seen it since, but I’m sure I’ve heard about it.
“I know there is an ongoing discussion between the SFA and Rangers about it.”
“On Craig, all I can say is that it is out of character for him.” Everyone who knows him in Scotland knows him as a man, and this is out of character for him.
“The SFA, the club, and Craig are all discussing it.” I haven’t spoken to him about it.”
