The appointment comes after the 36-year-old was first linked to the job less than 24 hours ago..

Last year, United’s former captain earned his UEFA Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification in the country.

He balanced the 18-month course with his role as chair of the Professional Footballers’ Association, and he was frequently seen on the touchline as part of Karl Robinson’s coaching staff.

Mousinho was also in charge of both defensive and offensive set pieces for United.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Mous, and he leaves with our thanks and best wishes for the future,” said head coach Karl Robinson on the club’s website.

“He has been an outstanding servant to our club and he will remain a friend to us all..

He has made no secret of his desire to advance and become a manager; we have assisted him along his career path, as we do with all of our employees; and he is joining a great club where I am confident he will excel..
