Javier Mascherano has denied claims that Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho was passed over for Argentina’s World Cup squad due to a lack of attitude.’
Garnacho returned to form just in time for the tournament in Qatar, but national team manager Lionel Scaloni chose more experienced players despite two injury setbacks.
Garnacho has been dubbed the “crown jewel” of Manchester United’s academy system since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020. The 18-year-old has had to wait his turn, but a recent run of games has given him hope of making Argentina’s prestigious World Cup squad..
He was called up to the senior team unexpectedly earlier this year, indicating that he has a future with the Albiceleste, but he has yet to earn his first cap. Instead, he has spent most of his time with Mascherano’s U20 team, where he lit up the 2022 Toulon Tournament with four goals in as many games.
That puts the Liverpool legend in a good position to pass judgment on Garnacho, who some believe missed out on the World Cup squad due to an attitude issue..
He behaved spectacularly the first time Scaloni brought him in March, and then again when we went to Toulon “Mascherano revealed this to The Mirror. “Garnacho is a respectful young man. Even though he didn’t know them, he formed a strong bond with the boys who play in Argentina.
“I’m not sure why they say what they say, but he had a 10 out of 10 behavior and predisposition with us. Garnacho is clearly a fantastic player. There’s a reason he’s playing for Manchester United at the age of 18..
