Kevin Keegan has revealed that he told Eddie Howe he would be ‘fine’ at Newcastle United if the Magpies boss was ‘open and up front’ with supporters..
Back in November 2021, Howe reached out to Keegan to gain a better understanding of the club from the Newcastle legend. Some managers would have been too proud to pick up the phone, but Howe has always been eager to embrace Newcastle’s history and respect those who have come before him.
In addition to speaking with Keegan, Howe has used the past to inspire his players to create their own history, whether by showing old group footage or inviting heroes like Alan Shearer to speak to his squad.
In terms of special guests, Howe told ChronicleLive last week that he will ‘definitely arrange’ for Keegan to visit the training ground, and the 72-year-old has clearly proven to be an ally for both the Newcastle head coach and the club’s owners.
“I spoke with two of the owners shortly after they took over, “According to Keegan, as reported by the Mirror. “They also visited Alan Shearer. I was very impressed with them, as I had been with Eddie Howe.
He called and left a message at the time. I contacted him, and he asked what advice I would give him. I only said one thing: be honest with your supporters. He’ll be fine if you’re open and honest with them.”
