Gary Neville has issued a warning to Arsenal about Manchester United’s future after their Carabao Cup victory on Sunday..
The Red Devils won their first major trophy since 2017 with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Wembley, as Erik ten Hag continues to rebuild the club. United are still in with a chance of completing a quadruple this season, despite being on the outside looking in.
Arsenal and Manchester City are the clear favorites to win the Premier League title in May, with United trailing their local rivals by six points and the Gunners by eight.
After the win at Wembley, Neville told Sky Sports that, while United still have some ground to make up on the top two, their first trophy under ten Hag could be the first of many.
He stated, via Metro: “Some of those players were part of a team that I and other Manchester United fans called a disgrace at the end of last season. It was a nightmare to watch. They were split. The transformation is dramatic. Erik ten Hag has done something incredible.
“We didn’t win a trophy between 2003 and 2006, and you feel like you’ll never win a league again or be in that position again.
This trophy was the catalyst for the squad to feel confident and believe in itself.
This squad will be dangerous with a medal around their neck because Erik ten Hag is expected to improve them over the next 12 to 18 months. They’re not close to Arsenal or Manchester City, no doubt, but where they are and what they’re doing is something I couldn’t have predicted six months ago.”
Another Manchester United legend, Roy Keane, echoed Neville’s comments, praising ten Hag’s work in such a short period of time and expecting them to use it as a “springboard” for bigger and better things.
Erik ten Hag was hired to try to rebuild the club and get them to compete more “He stated.
“I’ve been very critical of what’s happened in the last few years, and I disliked what they stood for. They weren’t a team, they weren’t together, there were problems on and off the field, but what the manager has accomplished in such a short period of time is incredible.
They’ve done well in recruiting, and they have a good spirit. They weren’t at their best today, but they did win a football game, which the fans appreciated.
“There’s a lot of hard work ahead of us; the players must use this as a springboard to win more trophies in the coming years; that’s what it’s all about playing for Manchester United.”
