Erik ten Hag has praised Sir Alex Ferguson’s “eye for creativity” as the Reds manager seeks to emulate the Manchester United title-winning manager..
They had dinner together before United’s Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle last month. While some details of their conversation will be kept private, it is clear that Ten Hag and Ferguson already get along.
United have not won the Premier League since Ferguson’s departure, with the Reds winning the title in his final season in charge in 2012/13. Although Ten Hag’s team is increasingly unlikely to win the championship this season, the Dutchman still has a chance to win three titles..
During an interview with Ten Hag on BT Sport, Robin van Persie, the Reds’ top goalscorer the previous season, asked his compatriot about Ferguson’s impact at Old Trafford.
“He’s here every day, and you can feel it,” Ten Hag said. “I believe he brings a winning mentality as well as an eye for creativity.
You were one of those good strikers with big personalities who decided big games. I believe he brought it to this club, and it’s great to talk about it with him.”
Ferguson lavished praise on Ten Hag following the Reds’ Carabao Cup victory. The 81-year-old praised the Dutchman’s acquisitions and insisted that the former Ajax manager had a “grip” on the club..
“The foundation of United is success,” he told Sky Sports. “He’s going in the right direction.” His signings have been excellent – I believe this was crucial – and he now has a firm grip on the club, which is extremely important for him.
“You try to get off to a good start right away when you come to United, and he’s doing well.”
