Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has admitted that he would relish the opportunity to return to his former club Barcelona..
Cucurella joined Barcelona at Under-16 level in 2012 but left for Eibar seven years later, only for the Blaugrana to activate his buyback clause 16 days later, re-signing him and loaning him to Getafe, whom he would join permanently in 2020.
Cucurella joined Brighton after another year and impressed enough to earn a big-money move to Chelsea in 2022, where he has struggled to replicate the levels he showed during his debut season in England..
“I didn’t get the chance to really play for Barcelona, and I’ve always been disappointed about that,” said Cucurella, whose only appearance for the La Liga club was a seven-minute cameo in the Copa del Rey in 2017. “In the end, if I had the opportunity again, I would value it; it would be very nice.”
Cucurella will hope to use the extra training sessions to reacquaint himself with former Brighton manager Graham Potter and figure out what has caused him to struggle so much this season..
The 24-year-old, whose transfer to Chelsea could cost up to £62 million, has started 14 times in all competitions but has failed to impress, losing his spot at left-back to Ben Chilwell before the Englishman was injured.
Barcelona, meanwhile, is still looking to sign their current left-back prodigy, Alejandro Balde, to a new contract after his impressive start to the season earned him a spot in Luis Enrique’s World Cup squad as Jose Gaya’s replacement..
