The conversation took place in 2017 when Lewandowski was still playing for Bayern Munich and they faced Liverpool in the Audi Cup in preseason, and the Pole admitted during the conversation that he didn’t know if his former boss was serious about considering a move for him.
In 2017, we hosted Liverpool FC and Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup in Munich,” Lewandowski told BILD (via Talksport).
“On that occasion, we spoke. ‘Don’t you want to come to Liverpool?’ Klopp asked. We exchanged glances before I burst out laughing.”
The 34-year-old played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund between 2010 and 2014, scoring 103 goals in 187 games, and he added that he didn’t know if his former boss was joking about signing him.
I’m not sure he was entirely serious. But going to Liverpool never occurred to me.”
Since their conversation, Lewandowski has gone on to score 261 career goals, leaving Liverpool fans to wonder what might have happened if the pair had been reunited at Anfield..
